Episode 33: Stormy Marlowe Orlin ‘14

Career:

Following graduation in 2014 with a BBA in Management from UNG, the technology space immediately became my area of focus. Starting with YikYak, a social media start up out of Atlanta, I traveled the country on a tour bus with 5 other colleagues using grassroots efforts to increase usage and momentum for the mobile app. I was then offered a position that handled on-air ads and commercial placements at Fox Sports which allowed me to settle in the Atlanta area for a brief period of time. While the perks of the Fox Sports gig were entertaining, I desperately wanted to reenter the technology space. The next several years I worked for both education and financial technology companies throughout the Atlanta area as a Product Manager; I managed software development teams setting the vision and strategy for the website, app, or product at hand.

Though I found quick success and upward movement in tech, I began to feel pulled to serve my community in a hands-on way. While interviewing at Tesla, which would move my husband George and I across the country to California, I decided the time for change was immediate. With the support of my husband and family my focus shifted from technology companies to medical school. After successfully completing a post-bacc-pre-med program at Agnes Scott in Atlanta, I am now entering my second year of medical school at Mercer University School of Medicine in Macon, Georgia. I am currently working with amputees, helping patients learn to adjust to life with prosthetics and new ways of mobility. As for my future plans, I see myself in a field of surgery, integrated fully with my community, as well as helping wounded military and veterans in some medical capacity.

Personal/UNG:

While at UNG I worked on campus at the Print Shop for all 4 years of my undergrad. I attribute MUCH of my success to the lessons learned working on campus. Specifically, Wendy Gerheim, my then manager pushed me outside of my comfort zone, urging me to explore graphic design skills on the job. That very skill set would be what got me in the door at my very first IT job. I am SO thankful for her above and beyond guidance and support.

My husband George Orlin and I met during our freshman year at UNG where we would spend 4 years as close friends. After graduation we both moved to Atlanta. Over the next several years, our friendship evolved into much more; we were married in February of 2017. We now live in Macon where I attend MUSM and he works remotely for Facebook.
